Congratulations to our Dpstar team for the First UK (Keadby 2) Combined Gas Cycle Power Plant Project completion of design, engineering and commissioning of electrical heat tracing system, instrumentation, power and control panels, and insulation.

Project Description

The power plant needed to have anti freeze, temperature control and maintenance and not forgetting insulation for their main equipment, pipeline, water feed, valves, pumps and instrumentation. Dpstar Group’s engineering department did the FEED Front End Engineering Design, proposals and submission and was awarded the project after a rigorous international technical and tendering qualification process. Companies from few countries participated and the criteria for selection and award was on the basis of best turnkey design, engineering, commercial, installation, commissioning and project references.

Background/Description of Keadby

Keadby Power Plant was originally developed and owned by Keadby Generation, a 50:50 joint venture between Scottish Hydro Electric and NORWEB. Scottish Hydro Electric bought NORWEB’s 50% stake in 1997 to become the sole owner of the plant. SSE Thermal has partnered with Siemens Energy to introduce first-of-a-kind, high-efficiency gas-fired generation technology to the UK. Siemens was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the plant along with a 15-year servicing contract.

Keadby 2 is an 840MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant being developed in North Lincolnshire, UK and is expected to become the cleanest and most-efficient gas-fired power station in Europe. Keadby 2 has the potential to be upgraded to decarbonise its electricity generation through the use of carbon capture and incorporation of hydrogen technology. The station will supply power to approximately 800,000 homes and will also strengthen industrial decarbonisation in the Humber region.

Keadby Combined-cycle Power Plant Make-up

This large scale, efficient energy generation power plant provides more than 63% efficiency in combined cycle operations with installation of world-leading Siemens HL class SGT5-9000 HL 50 Hz turbine which pushes efficiency and performance to the next level. The project is still on-going and the plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2022.

Siemens HL-Class Gas Turbine Features

Siemens SGT-9000HL 50Hz four-stage air-cooled gas turbine comes with 567MW single-cycle power output and features advanced can-annular combustion system, multi-layer thermal barrier coating on blades and vanes, and advanced 3D blading for higher aero-efficiency in the compressor. It is derived from Siemens’ proven HL-class gas turbine design, which has completed more than 650,000 operating hours with 99.5% reliability. With a ramp-up rate of 85MW/min, the SGT-9000HL 50Hz gas turbine provides more than 63% efficiency in combined-cycle operations. The nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of the turbine are below two parts per million (ppm).

Gas Supply & Electricity Transmission For Keadby 2

The Keadby 2 power plant will be supplied with natural gas from National Grid’s gas transmission system through a new pipeline connected to the existing gas compound at Keadby 1. National Grid’s has confirmed sufficient supply of gas for the new power plant. The electricity output from Keadby 2 will be fed into  National Grid’s electricity transmission system via an overhead transmission line connected to the Grid’s existing 400kV substation  located immediately north-west of Keadby 1 power plant.
